SUNSPOT 798: What a difference a day makes. On August 19th, sunspot 798 was barely visible. Today, August 20th, it is five times wider than the entire planet Earth. Daily images captured by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) show how quickly this 'spot has grown:

When sunspots develop at breakneck speed, their magnetic fields can become unstable and explode. Sunspot 798 now poses a threat for M-class solar flares.

RAINBOW SPOKES: A curious rainbow with spokes appeared over Moers, Germany, on August 3rd. "It looked just like a wagon wheel," says Helmut Groell, who took this picture:

Atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley explains: "The next time you see a rainbow, look inside it. The sky is brighter there because raindrops deflect sunlight towards the inside of the bow as well as forming its colors. When a small cloud shadows some of the drops they can no longer form part of the bow or light the inside. The result is a shadowy 'spoke.' The spokes converge on the antisolar point, the rainbow's center, to produce a wagon wheel in the sky."



Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs are on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time.
