Summary: On August 1st, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth suddenly turned south--a condition that renders Earth's magnetosphere vulnerable to solar wind gusts. A G2-class geomagnetic storm began soon after. Sky watchers in Canada and parts of the United States saw colorful auroras on August 2nd. The storm continued fitfully until August 4th. |
