Today night I've tried to capture my first Auroras in my life - with luck. I observed from Kiel in Northern Germany (54° 20' N). Around local midnight (22:00 UT) the auroras starts to intensify for 15-20 minutes, so that they were visible to the naked eye. The Pictures were taken at 21:57 UT and 21:58 UT with 25 sec of exposure. It was a really exciting show.

Recreational trip out of town, with the intention of shooting Perseids, showed the aurora borealis show... 05/08/2011, at. 23:16 - the first frame... Purpose - The Milky Way, Perseus, Cassiopeia... Focused on counting the next meteor absolutely no notice, when about 23:28 on the horizon begins to appear aurora... Middle of the night... I rub my eyes in amazement... "is probably the aurora!" - I think and at the same time I feel like a major event takes... and this was the moment... maximum... I immediately thought about the article that I read in the morning... 40% probability of Poland... I thought - "unrealistic in our latitudes..." As can be seen not so much unrealistic as infrequent... And there is no question here of photomontage :) Photo details: Canon 20D, Canon 10 - 22 mm, 10 mm, f/3.5, 140 x 30 s, ISO1600

Well we are completely clouded out here in Ireland but I managed to watch the show from the comfort of my bed as the lazer pointer on my magnetometer cartwheeled across the bedroom. Plot shows the storm to the right of the graph.

I had given a talk on Noctilucent Clouds to my local Astronomy Club earlier in the evening. When I returned home and saw that the sky was clear, I quickly grabbed my camera gear and headed off out to grab some photographs of the auroral display. I didn't have time to go to a darker site as clouds were rapidly approaching from the south.
