Summary: Solar wind streams buffeting Earth's magnetosphere have sparked high-latitude auroras several times this month--notably Dec. 6th-8th and again on Dec. 12th. The really big display occured on Dec. 14th when a CME hit Earth and sparked a severe geomagnetic storm. See page 2.

Quite high activity tonight above Iceland. Not as bright as on the 8th of december, but still very big. One shot from Reykjavik looking north-east with the mountain Esja and one picture from the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula, looking west.

Photo details: Nikon D200, 24 mm, f/4, 50-75s exposure, 400 iso.

Very intense green and purple auroras this evening. Activity was high although no more auroras appeared after about 10pm. Photos where taken at the Seltjarnarnes peninsula, and in the background of the photos is the Icelandic capital Reykjavik and the mountain Esja.

The huge arch was very impressive. Even the full moon did not stop the bright aurora getting through.

Extremely bright auroras were visible from anywhere downtown Reykjavik, even with street lights and almost full moon. They were moving very fast and were partly purple, filling the whole sky.

Photo details: Nikon D200, AF 24 mm and AIS 35 mm, f/5.6, 400 iso, 10 s exposure.

I got lucky between the clouds; they lasted for about half an hour.

After six weeks working in Iceland and thinking I'd never see the aurora, the sky finally put on a wonderful show.
