Summary: The deepest solar minimum in nearly 100 years has not put a stop to Northern Lights around the Arctic Circle. Solar wind streams hitting Earth's magnetic field have triggered several beautiful displays this month--including one doozy during the Geminid meteor shower. See also Nov. 2009.

We took a trip away from the light pollution of the city to have a look at the Geminids and we were treated with some faint Auroras as well. Lovely -20 degrees so the battery of my camera died out quite quickly. We were on the sight between 8pm-10pm local time and saw a lot of Geminids. Sometimes even something like 3 fireballs within seconds and they were all over the sky. Don't know if all of them were Geminids though. I only managed to catch one faint Geminid with my camera diving in to the display of Auroras. And when i got back home i was treated with another kind of light phenomenon of ice crystals: Light Pillars danced in the icy sky like auroras as a few Geminids flew pass in the background. All in all a lovely spaceweather day again !

I went out to photo the geminids and wasn't sure what to expect. I had photographed the perseid shower and managed to get a shot with up to 8-12 meteors and the aurora way back in april! I was hoping for similar results, and while I saw a lot of meteors I only managed to capture just this one. Brilliant blue streaks across the sky. I will be going out again to try for another few shots.
