Summary: For reasons researchers do not fully understand, auroras love equinoxes. Here's the proof. Right on cue, the vernal equinox of 2009 kicked off a pretty 5-night display of photographic Northern Lights around the Arctic Circle. See also February 2009.

I went to Nome to shoot the finish of the Iditarod and this time of year you can almost bank on some Northern Lights viewing, even during solar minimum. The foreground is an old gold dredge, one of many that dot the landscape in the area.

With my friend Gilles Boutin, from Levis (Quebec), I went to the Northern Lights to take a few pictures. It was very quiet, but we had a chance to make some exercice.

Photo details: Canon EOS 30D, 10mm, 800 ISO, f 3.5, 25-30 sec.

Fabulous fast-moving Northern Lights, mostly green with some tinges of red -- and got to watch the last UAF rocket of the season too!
