Summary: After a 13.6-year absence, Comet 8P/Tuttle is once again traveling through the inner solar system. At closest approach to Earth on Jan. 1st and 2nd, 2008, the comet will brighten to 5th or 6th magnitude, barely visible to the naked eye but a fine target for backyard telescopes and digital cameras. This shows the comet path for 5 hours and 5 min. Comet is moving from right to left. The intensity of the comet appear to fade a little at the end, that is only because of greater lightpollution during the night as the object moves over the light from a nearby airport.

Tony, What a surprise it was to record a beautiful thin gas tail streaming from the comet on this evening. Our deep exposures of the pair show not only the fine details in the M33 Galaxy, but a huge cyan comets coma, sharp stellar nucleus, and a long thin plasma tail extending to the upper right. This image was taken in a 3 hour long continuous dual stream of data and combined sigma reject directly onto the 7:02 pm data.

Really beautiful night and a beautiful pairing of a galaxy and comet.

I was hoping the faint tail would show. It was there but the color filtered images blocked it. This is a grayscale image using the 5" and ccd. Image rotated 90 deg cw. Image is a 2 frame mosaic with a 2x2 bin to gather more info but less detail.

It was a good show to see two almost equally bright objects at vastly different distances close to each other in the sky.

Beautifully contrasting colors of M33 and 8P/Tuttle. Due to the fast movement of Tuttle it took some processing to obtain this color image from different 2-minute R,G,B and L exposures! Homebuilt CCD-camera, RGB-filter set and f=300mm Telephoto lens at F#4.
