Summary: On July 11, 2010, the new Moon passed directly in front of the sun, producing a solar eclipse of rare beauty across the South Pacific. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. I spent much time trying to find the right place on the island for totality, and this was it... with the Moai "looking" straight at the corona. Shot with a Minolta X-700 using Velvia 50 film.

Matt Ventimiglia,
Shots taken on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) at the Tahai Archeological Complex, all on eclipse day. The Complex is comprized of three Ahu (Vai Uri - 5 partially restored moai, Tahai - 1 moai, and Ko Te Riku - 1 moai with reconstructed eyes and topknot).

Wide shots taken with Olympus E-30 DSLR camera. Eclipse close ups taken with Olympus EVolt-500 at prime focus of Meade 5000 Series APO (80mm f/6) Rainbow panorama shot taken with Casio 8MP pocket camera. The weather was dicey, but we lucked out and saw almost all of totality unobstructed. The third contact diamond ring was seen behind thin clouds which acted as a projection screen for shadow bands usually seen on the ground!

Total Solar Eclipse from the southern end of Anaa. Stunning view across the lagoon to the eclipsed sun with sunset colours around the horizon below the moons shadow. Canon 350D with 18mm lens. Composite of 5 images with exposures of 1/1000 sec to 1/10 sec all at f4.5 and 400 ISO.

Total Solar Eclipse was amazing, however it wasn't as dark during totality as during Total Solar Eclipse 2008 in Siberia. Canon eos7d and Russian made Rubinar 8/500 lens.
