Details:
The aurora display tonight was beyond incredible, by far the best Ive ever seen at mid-latitudes. It started off relatively nondescript with only a dull green glow visible on the horizon. We were about ready to give up on it around 12:30 Central time when something amazing happened. Out of nowhere, there was a bright pulse of green light about 15 degrees above the horizon. This light was so bright it startled us as we jumped up to get to our cameras. On cue, brilliant green and purple pillars with hints of red filled the northern sky for the next 10 minutes or so. These short but brilliant displays would continue on until twilight rendered them invisible. The convergence of the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter in tandem with the brilliant lights was the icing on the cake. What a perfect night!
