I went out with my brand new Nikon D800E and brand new Nikkor 24-120mm F4 lens just out of Christchurch for a quick try on the southern skies, and lo ! aurora action going on just below the LMC ! Very special setup for a first light I can tell ya, and thanksfully I had learned how to use the camera in the dark at home before that. The only problems were with the white balance settings which I hadnt had the time to look at in details, so had to compensate for it a little bit through image processing ...

Lens at 24mm and F5.6, 25s exposure @ 3200ISO. All NR, vignetting and other compensation settings off. Tussocks in the foreground illuminated by light pollution from the city behind me. ;-)
