Details:
This display of Northern Lights was quite a surprise! Shortly after midnight, I was experimenting to see if the night sky could be photographed from a ship using a tripod. Since I cant make out dim colors at night, I thought nothing about the streaks of white light in the sky until I photographed it. The range of colors was like nothing I had every seen before in photographs. The curtains of color slowly changed by the minute as I shot more images.

I took these images from the polar expedition vessel R/V Akademik Sergey Vavilov. Its incredibly stable (when it wants to be) which allowed for great 10 second exposures. The setting was so unusual due to the ships captain on the lookout for icebergs with 3 spotlights. We were anchored for the night because he wasnt about to move in this iceberg-infested fjord until daylight. The weather and active sunspots helped too:) I initially set up my tripod on the port side looking toward the bridge, and them moved to the bow once I new what was happening in the sky. I had to dial back the first few shots at ISO-3200 to 1600 because it was too bright for a 10 second exposure.

This image was taken early in the session from the port side looking forward to the bridge. One of the ships spotlights is visible projecting out to the left.

Equipment: Canon 5D Mark II, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II (at 16mm, f/2.8)
