Details:
Using 15 x 70 binoculars, I caught sight of the 3.1% lit young moon at 7:10 p.m. EDT on Oct. 16, 2012. The moon was 1 day and 11 hours old. The photos I shot during the next half hour were from just south of Frankfort, Kentucky. Though there were thin clouds, I could easily see this thin crescent with the unaided eye after spotting it with binoculars. Gorgeous, if subtle, sight!
