While providing a solar outreach event for the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, GA yesterday, we witnessed something in the skies that none of us have ever seen before. The outer cloud layers of hurricane Sandy were passing through Atlanta and causing a standard 22deg solar halo. We were also treated with SunDogs (Parhelia) at each edge of the halo along with an upper tangent arc and some extremely rare additional Sundogs and a complete additional full sky halo that intersected the Suns center. I dont even know what to call this feature as I have never even heard of this. These beautiful ice crystal refractions lasted for a full hour. The National Weather Service folks were stumped as well. What a fortunate sighting for my Canon 5D camera and Sigma 4.5mm fisheye lens.

Parhelic circle(?). Ive only seen one once (winter, east Tennessee); it was quite bright and could have been mistaken for a band of clouds in the cirrus-streaked sky (except that it was stationary and clouds blew through it). Google / Wikipedia will provide details, but Ive not seen any full-sky photos other than yours.

Spoke too soon, now Google shows me a nice photo of a parhelic circle: http://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/parcirc.htm
Cheers!
