Details:
These are light pillars over Dillon, Montana, formed on the cold morning of November 10, 2012, when the temperature was approximately 6 degrees F. Ice crystals had formed in the cold air in the aftermath of a snowstorm, and the sky cleared for a short time. These pillars form when a light source is close to the ground and the atmosphere is full of floating ice. The effect is caused by the streetlights radiating through the layer of crystals.
