The last couple of days we have been caught off guard with early afternoon auroras, rushing out, just to come to late to the party. Today I was armed and ready for early auroras, but no such ting. Crystal clear skies was present over northern Norway, with Jupiter easily visible close to the moon. The magnetograms at the University of Tromsø was completely dead and no change in solar wind or density, so I though I should call it a early night. I just had to look out the window first, and am I glad I did!!! I could see some green lights on the sky, there seemed to be a party in the neighborhood! I grabbed my gear and rushed out with toothpaste still in my mouth!! And surely enough, again there was a surprise party, it just had started a couple of hours later than previous days. Since I had been let down the previous days with coming to late to the party I decided to do some nearby shooting downtown in Tromsø. Normally you would want to escape city lights to get a good view of the auroras. However, if auroras are bright, it is perfectly possible to see it also from a bright city. Actually, the combination of a majestic aurora and a beautiful lit city can be quite a sight. The burst was quiet strong and beautiful, but it was short! So I am glad I went for this shot today. At least I got to the party before it was over and I probably was the last guest to leave. The shape of this aurora kind of reminds me of an figure, maybe a guardian angel?
