Would be interested to hear your thoughts what this light is across the sky, it was visual for at least 4mins before it faded away towards the horizon. The shot was taken a few miles away from Durness in Scotland on the 29th Sept at 23:43PM whilst awaiting for the Aurora to show. shot at 10mm F3.5 80 sec exp. this light / trail appeared twice during the evening’s photo shot but in a different location and was not so intense or stretch across to the horizon. Its hard to explain the way this formed it just started of faintly then became more intense and so visual to the eye.

I think its a contrail. Perhaps illuminated by same means as noctilucent clouds???

That seems to be a contrail

I photographed this exact same beam of light from the West of Ireland showing it slightly higher in the Plough. This should rule out aircraft as there is a few degrees between Durness, Scotland and Belmullet, Ireland. Could it be from a Meteor or the trail of a fireball maybe?

My friends and I saw this from the Isle of Arran, South West Scotland. We didnt see it appear but we watched it for about 3-4 minutes where it became diffuse and faded. I doubt it was auroral, we are not far enough North to see brigt curtains, it was grey in colour. I hope it was a contrail and we didnt just miss a fireball. Perhaps it was a very high flying plane (no launches from florida that night)It would be heading North/North East.

Didnt Space-X launch a rocket about this time? There are some videos of a moon sized glowing thing that is identified as a fuel dump from a space-x rocket.

Not convinced this is aurora, I witnessed the beam/aurora band during the massive display on the 9th October 2012 an it was much brighter and orientated more west to east as you would expect, breaking up into rays after about half an hour. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67966149@N04/8079667318/in/set-72157631726169760

From info gathered it appears to be Falcon 9 fuel dump which carried Cassiope and other satellites in to orbit.
