Summary: Nacreous cloud season is underway. The temperature of the polar stratosphere has dropped below -85 C, the threshold for formation of tiny ice crystals that diffract sunlight to produce flamboyant "mother-of-pearl" (nacreous) colors. Icy nacreous clouds are best seen from cold places such as Scandinavia, Iceland and Alaska during the twilight hours after sunset or before sunrise. See also January 2008.

These colorful clouds caught my attention today. Although it's been mild in Trondheim lately, it's obviously cold higher up.

There were nacreous clouds after sunset tonight in Telemark, Norway. They lasted for over an hour. They greeted us after coming from Christmas Eve Mass and they were a lovely present for this Season.

The cloud was standing out from the background in a very "fluoerscent" way.
