It seemed to
come out of nowhere. Earlier in the day the aurora indicators
were looking poor. But during the evening hours of March
23, our group watched a beautiful auroral display erupting
over Skiland (http://home.att.net/~Skiland/), northeast
of Fairbanks, Alaska. Just beyond the next ridge about five
miles away, the LIDAR Observatory of the Poker Flat Research
Range (http://www.pfrr.alaska.edu/pfrr/facility.htm) was
shooting a laser beam skyward; the scattered light from
it shows up as a nearly vertical beam near the image center
(on the landscape-format shot).

12 Mile Pass
on the Steese Highway, just outside of Central, Alaska.
The temperature at the time of this display was approximately
-30 F. This was taken at 14mm on a full frame sensor. This
incredible aroura filled nearly the entire sky. |
