Aurora Gallery back to spaceweather.com |
Summary: Solar activity has been mostly low this month. Even so, fitful geomagnetic storms have broken out at high latitudes producing auroras over Alaska, northern Canada, Scandinavia--and even Michigan! [See also the September 2004 aurora gallery.] Got

Activity was forecast to be active so out we went and saw these nice aurora. Not wonderfully bright or particularly spectacular but very nice. Canon 300D 18-55/F3.5 @40 secs. In the one image I had some fun with my LED flashlight. It worked great. |

Even now, with solar minimum approaching, there are still bright auroras to see if you go north. I live in Denmark. But when I want to see Auroras I travel up north to Kiruna, Abisko an Tromsoe. Almost Auroras guaranty even at solarminimum.Photo details: Canon eos300D. 15 sec.400 ISO. f/:3,5 18mm |

I really didn't expect to see auroras after looking at today's blank Sun. In fact, I drove to Sherbrooke's suburbs to take all-sky pictures for the light pollution control project of the Mont-Mégantic's Astrolab and by 1:30 am EDT, I was surprised when the sky caught fire! What a wonder to see! Taken with a Nikon Coolpix 4500, 400 ASA, ± 20 sec exposure. |
