Summary: Solar activity continues to increase after a two-year solar minimum that ranks among the century's deepest. The return of sunspots and a resurgent solar wind is good news for aurora watchers, who are seeing some of the best displays since ~2006. See also August 2010.

We have had significantly cloudy weather at night through the last six weeks. Finally clear nights have brought out auroras. This night, two nights after the "super harvest moon", the northern lights shown over our elevated structure we call the Big House. We are at almost 11,000ft on top of the Greenland ice sheet. One photo is a two picture stitch. The other is a five photo stitch and includes left to right: moon, jupiter, auroras over the Big House and a fog bow 180 degrees from the moon. Magical!

I came to Alaska to see the Aurora from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK and it did not fail to disappoint. Initially i didn't know what i was looking for, but once you get your eye in, it is obvious. I have seen 4 Auroras over the past week, this night was the strongest. The lights danced and shimmered across the sky like a laser show. At one point the Aurora formed what looked like a dragons head, then it melted away. This image is a series of ten shots stacked. Exif info = Canon 5D mark II - 20secs (x10), ISO 1000, f/5.6, @24mm

Super Harvest Moon was so bright that the weak Auroras was hard to see, but from time to time Auroras became quite active. Canon EOS 5D MarkII, EOS 500D, EF15/2.8, Sigma 8/3.5

What a display!!! I imaged more that 600 photos last night! It was cool, -5 deg C, but low wind and clear as a bell! I had to stop taking pictures in order to make back for work. Things started off around 11:45pm and I packed it in around 5:00am. Totally worth the lost sleep!
