Another fantastic Moon eclipse...the last total eclipse of the Moon until 2011 for my location. The Moon seemed placed by someone on a background full of stars..it waas magnificent ! Photo details: 8"Newtonian, Canon EOS 350D, ISO 400-800, images are stacks of 17 to 50 individual frames at exposure times of 0.8 to 1.2 seconds.

This eclipse was fighting some high clouds that somewhat softened the views. This image sequence was made with a Canon 300D, ISO 100-800, 1/40 second to 1 second, and a 500mm Maksutov telescope.

I shot the eclipse from the bitter cold in western Iowa(0F). I mainly took photos to document the sky going dark as the moon was eclipsed. I just love that aspect of lunar eclipses. I have a gif animation of this on my site. The first frame looks like day, but it's not, just strong moonlight and a longer shutter. As the eclipse progresses the stars pop out and the ground darkens. It's kind of neat. I didn't mean to make an animation out of the shots I was taking for it, but noticed I sort of was towards the end. Anyway, all were taken with a rebel XT, canon 10-22 EF-s, canon 17-40L, and canon 100-400L...ISOs between 100 and 1600. As soon as the eclipse was completely finished I stumbled onto a big moon halo, as if the moon was saying, "hey you, I'm not done yet." I guess I also have an iridium flare in one of the shots documenting the sky lightness as the eclipse got underway. There's a lot to shoot on an eclipse night, other than just the zoomed in eclipsed moon images.

This is a composite image of the lunar eclipse with a telescopic view on the left and a telephoto view on the right show the moon along with Saturn and Regulus.

I observed the 2008 Feb. 21 eclipse from a village in central Iran, with crystal clear winter sky of the high altitude region. At the site total eclipse started at the moonset in dawn.

Despite the fog and and passing clouds, we spent a nice time on the beach taking pictures of the landscape under the Full Moon, before the eclipse, especially a nice animation showing the tide going up, and emerging the tip of my tripod, so that the frame is shifting a little as is sink in the wet sand! During the eclipse, we moved to another place to put a menhir (erected about 3000 BC) in the picture.

It was clear leading up to totality, but then clouds moved over for a little more then an hour. Only one small brake in the clouds gave me a short glimps of the total eclipse. After the total eclipse was done the clouds moved out and I was able to get some more pics using a 10" SNT and a Canon Rebel XT.

I photographed my backyard observatory under the lunar eclipse. It has always fascinated me how dark it gets and how the shadows change during a lunar eclipse. I used a Nikon D200 with an 11 mm lense to take 30 second exposures untill mid eclipse when the batteries in the camera stopped working at the 4 degree F outside temperature.
