Summary: Solar activity continues to increase after a two-year solar minimum that ranks among the century's deepest. The return of sunspots and a resurgent solar wind is good news for aurora watchers, who are seeing some of the best displays since ~2006. See also May. 2010.

A beautiful evening with clear skies, the glow from the sunset and fullmoon. Together with promising forecast regarding Aurora activity we was ready for the first photosession for this season. The first visible outburst was seen at approx. 22.35 and lasted for 7-10 min. It was great to see her again :) Camera: Canon 5D mkII, EF 24mm/f:1.4. ISO 100-200, 1,5 -5 sec, f 1.6-3.0

I've been impatiently waiting for the aurora season to start here in Tromsø. I was in doubt whether it would get dark enough yet, especially with the full moon out as well. I was jumping for joy when I saw that the aurora was strong enough to be visible! I drove to a nearby jetty. The show didn't last very long but it was beautiful - a great start to the aurora season!

Beautiful evening tonight in the West fjords of Iceland. Image taken shortly after midnight in Bardastrond. The auroras were fairly faint but easily visible with the full moon illuminating the scene over Snaefellsnes and Breidafjordur. Jupiter hanging low in the sky but shining brightly. What a wonderful autumn sky.

We still have bright skies in the north but what does it matter when the auroras are brighter !? - bright enough to challenge both the twilight skies and the full Moon, here in company with brilliant Jupiter - a lovely sight.

The skies were totally clear tonight, and the auroras stretched from the northwest overhead to the southeast. There were strong greens laced with a rainbow of color here at the Toolik Lake LTER. Bravo, solar wind!
