Summary: Two solar wind shock waves buffeted Earth's magnetosphere on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 28th. The disturbances were launched from the Sun three days earlier when SOHO coronagraphs spotted a full halo coronal mass ejection billowing away from the vicinity of sunspot group 9201. Geomagnetic activity on Oct 28th reached minor (G1) storm levels for a three hour period spanning 0900-1200 UT (5:00 - 8:00 am EDT) and then subsided. Later that day the interplanetary magnetic field in the neighborhood of Earth turned sharply southward, which weakened the magnetosphere's resistance to solar wind gusts. This re-energized the storm. G1 conditions resumed from 2100 UT on Oct. 28th until 0600 UT on Oct. 29th.
