Details:
This was certainly a surprise aurora, with conditions officially registering as Quiet early in the evening though the Bz magnetic field index was aimed far south, a good sign. So I made a point of checking after dark and sure enough, a fairly bright aurora was present all across the northern horizon. But there was also an odd green band in the southern sky. That was all obvious to the naked eye, but what showed up on camera was the intense red curtains above, as broad and intense as I've seen them on my photos in the last few months. Both images are 30 seconds with a 24mm lens at f/2.2 and at either ISO 800 or 1250. The Canon 5D MkII camera is a filter-modified model making it more red sensitive than stock DSLR cameras.
