AURORA UPDATE: Last night a solar wind stream hit Earth, sparking auroras in several US states. Horace Smith caught this green arc hovering above St. Johns, Michigan:

The storm has subsided, but it could flare up again because Earth remains inside the solar wind stream. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras tonight.

TRANSIT OF MERCURY: If there was a contest for photos taken by spacecraft, Hinode would probably win. The new Japanese solar observatory took this picture on Nov. 8th:

The jet-black disk is Mercury transiting the sun. Hinode recorded the transit with 0.2-arcsecond resolution--almost as good as Hubble could do. Hubble, however, doesn't dare look at the sun; intense sunlight would damage its systems. Hinode's Solar Optical Telescope is designed specifically for this kind of work and promises many more fantastic sun-shots in the future.
