METEOR ALERT: The Leonid meteor storm peaks this year on Tuesday morning Nov. 19th. Are you ready? Follow the links below to learn more about the display and how to observe it.

LEONID ANIMATION: Science writer Frank Reddy created this animation of Earth as seen from the perspective of an incoming Leonid meteoroid. Rust-colored blobs denote clouds of meteoroids shed by comet Tempel-Tuttle. The meteor rate soars when Earth plunges into a cloud. Click for a larger movie.

The rising and falling colored curves indicate the number of meteors per hour that sky watchers might see under ideal observing conditions (ZHR). There are four curves because four teams of forecasters have issued different predictions. Which is correct? Go outside on Nov. 19th and see for yourself!

AURORA WATCH: So far this month, geomagnetic activity has been generally modest. Nevertheless, sky watchers have seen auroras as far south as Michigan. More Northern Lights are expected on or about Nov. 16th when Earth enters a solar wind stream flowing from a coronal hole on the Sun.
