THE ALIEN WORLD IN OUR OWN BACKYARD: Most worlds in the Solar System are staggeringly far away. Tens, even hundreds of millions of miles separate us from them. Have you ever tried to see a crater on Mercury or a glacier on Pluto through a backyard telescope? Be prepared to use your imagination.
Not so, the Moon. It's the alien world in our own backyard, only a quarter-million miles away. Before you read any further, click on this image and take a good long look at full resolution:
Philippe Tosi of Nîmes, France, took the picture on April 22nd. It's a mosaic of 21 exposures, capturing dozens of frozen lava seas, hundreds of mountain peaks, and more than a thousand craters. His instrument: A 10-inch telescope.
On April 26th the Moon will be full. And it's a supermoon--14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons of 2021. Got a telescope? You know what to do.
