GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING: One and perhaps two CMEs are about to hit Earth. The first, hurled toward us by Thursday's solar tsumani (C3), is expected to arrive on Aug. 29-30. The second, ejected by Saturday's solar flare (M4.7), could come on Aug. 31-Sept 1. Neither CME is particularly bright or powerful; however, they could combine to produce G1-class geomagnetic storms. AFTERGLOW OF A CME: On Aug. 27th, skies over Canada filled with color. It was the afterglow of a CME:

"What a great show," says photographer Jocelyn Blanchette, who took the picture from Fermont, Quebec.

The source of the display was a CME that struck Earth's magnetosphere the day before. At first the impact had little effect. But then Earth entered the CME's strongly-magnetized wake. Our planet's magnetic field is linked up with the CME's, sparking a G1-class geomagnetic storm and a lovely auroral afterglow. Aurora alerts: SMS Text.

ARCTIC WOLF SPACE PENDANT: This wolf glows in the dark--and it's been to the edge of space. The students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched the lupine pendant to the stratosphere on board a cosmic ray research balloon. The payload of radiation sensors and jewelry traveled 107,611 feet above Earth's surface:

You can have it for $99.95. The students are selling these pendants to support their cosmic ray ballooning program. Each one comes with a greeting card showing the wolf in flight and describing its journey to the stratosphere and back again.
